I primi francobolli profumati furono emessi nel 1973 dal Bhutan. Durante la loro produzione furono impregnati con un'essenza della varietà di rosa raffigurata, ma tale processo aveva una durata di profumazione stimata in soli tre mesi circa... Successivamente fu adottata una nuova tecnologia per profumare i francobolli, detta micro-incapsulazione (Scratch 'N Sniff™ o Rub'N Smell®), basata su un particolare inchiostro in cui vengono introdotte delle microcapsule di pochi micron contenenti l'aroma. Gli ingredienti di base sono acqua, olio, profumo, gelatina o polimeri solubili (urea poliossimetilene), oltre ad un catalizzatore per determinare la reazione chimica e un adesivo per fissare sulla carta. Solo quando le microcapsule vengono deliberatamente "grattate" si rompono e rilasciano la loro essenza. In questo tipo di tecnica la durata della profumazione può essere stimata anche in 3-5 anni, ma teoricamente può essere ancora più lunga, in dipendenza dal numero di strofinamenti o dal tipo di conservazione adottata.

The first scented stamps were issued in 1973 by Bhutan. During their production the stamps were impregnated with essence of the depicted rose varieties, but this process had a duration of scent estimated just three months... Years after it was adopted a new technology to scent the stamps, called micro-encapsulation (Scratch 'N Sniff™ or Smell 'N Rub®), based on a special ink where scent is held within bubbles. The basic ingredients are water, oil, scent, gelatin or soluble polymers (polyoxymethylene urea), as well as a catalyst for determining the chemical reaction and a water-soluble adhesive to affixe on the paper. Only when the microcapsules are deliberately "scratched", the bubbles burst and release their scent. In this technique the duration of the fragrance can be estimated even in 3-5 years, but theoretically may be even longer, depending on the number of rubbing or the type of preservation adopted.
